UPDATE: Multi-Town Pursuit Through Enfield Ends In Ellington Crash

One suspect in custody, one more being sought after wild chase Thursday afternoon.

A multi-town pursuit of a pair of burglary suspects in two stolen cars ended with two men hospitalized, including one of the suspects, and a pregnant Hispanic female suspect still at large.

"There was an interrupted burglary on South Road in Enfield," Sgt. Jose Claudio, resident trooper of Somers, said Thursday afternoon. "The suspects were last seen headed into Somers, and it turned into a multi-agency situation in which the suspects fled Enfield into Somers and eventually Ellington. There were a few crashes along the way, and it appears there was more than one suspect involved."

Enfield Capt. Jeff Golden said the suspects, including a Hispanic male, had stolen a car in Hartford earlier Thursday, and drove to a home on Enfield Street, where they stole another.

In separate cars, the suspects proceeded to burglarize a house on South Road, but were interrupted in progress. The suspects fled in the two vehicles, and Enfield police began two separate pursuits, Golden said.

One suspect drove down Hazard Avenue toward Somers, and the other went down Elm Street, passed the police station and turned east on Moody Road, Capt. Fred Hall said.

Severe rain made conditions extremely hazardous, and local police called off the pursuit when they entered Somers, Golden said.

The male suspect eventually crashed on Route 83 in Ellington, and fled on foot through a field. He eventually stole another vehicle on Willi Lane near the Ellington/Somers line, and during the course of that incident, a man believed to be the car owner was severely beaten, police said.

"At one point, the suspects did crash one car, and apparently in the process of trying to get out of the area, they assaulted a second homeowner and stole another vehicle," Claudio said.

That second vehicle ran over a short stone wall on the property at the corner of Egypt and Hoffman Roads in Ellington, and crashed into a tree on that same lot, where the male suspect was taken into custody, Claudio said.

The male suspect, who has yet to be identified, was transported via ambulance to an area medical facility. The female suspect has yet to be apprehended, Claudio said.

"We are still looking for other suspects," Claudio said. "We believe this is all associated with the original incident that occurred in Enfield. We are still trying to put the pieces together."

Vernon, Enfield and state police are all involved in the investigation, which is ongoing.
