Falcons defeat Raiders for second time this season.
Thursday's volleyball matchup at Fermi High School featured not only the renewal of a great crosstown rivalry, but a battle between two of the top four teams in the state Class M rankings. Enfield came into the contest ranked third, while the Falcons were right behind in fourth. Once the evening had ended, however, there was a considerable rearrangement in the standings. For the second time this season, Fermi got the upper hand on the Raiders, pounding out a 3-1 victory to claim their rival's former number three ranking. Enfield dropped to seventh with the loss. Game scores were 26-24, 18-25, 25-22 and 25-21. Let Patch save you time. Get great local stories like this delivered right to your inbox or smartphone every day with our free …

A lacrosse tournament offers up a lesson in restraint.
OK, I agree that stiffer competition can make a team better in the long run. I get that. It’s why the younger brothers and sisters of siblings involved in sports often show advanced skills early on. So there we were on a Saturday afternoon at a lacrosse tournament with teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. I got the feeling that the team from Long Island wasn’t making the trip to lose to a team made up of mostly football players and former baseball players (as one mom perfectly stated). I’ll make a crazy assumption that the team from LI spends the entire calendar year playing together as a unit. They could have been blindfolded and still have known where their teammates were. It was fun to watch — at first. With each game …

Enfield comes back to beat Wildcats 9-8 in NCCC baseball showdown Wednesday.
T.J. Diggs cracked a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Enfield the lead for good, as the Raiders captured a back-and-forth 9-8 victory over Suffield in NCCC baseball action Wednesday. A bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Kyle Lumbert off losing pitcher Dylan Rupp brought Enfield within 8-7, and an out later, Diggs singled to center off reliever Will Clark to bring in the tying and eventual winning runs. John Cerrato, who had started on the mound for Enfield but was relieved by Sal Spadaro early in the third inning, came back to pitch in the sixth and retired five straight Wildcats before Dalton Peck hit a two-out double in the seventh. With the tying run in scoring position, Cerrato bore down and induced a groundout …

Katie DaCosta named to replace Mary Roickle on interim basis.
Manchester Community College women’s basketball head coach Mary Roickle has resigned after one season with the program to pursue a business opportunity in Boston. The school has named former Central Connecticut State University player and Classical Magnet High School girls coach Katie DaCosta as interim head coach, effective immediately. Roickle came to MCC as a semi-retired pharmaceutical executive a year ago and led the team to a 15-8 record and playoff berth despite having just one returning player from Robert Turner Jr.’s highly successful program. “This was an opportunity that I couldn’t walk away from,” Roickle said of the position she took toward the end of the basketball season. “First and foremost I am going to miss the student …

Falcons post 154-185 victory to up their record to 12-1.
The golf teams from Enfield and Fermi high schools renewed their crosstown rivalry at Grassmere Country Club Monday, but for the first time in nearly four decades, something seemed to be missing. That something was longtime coach Bob Lengyel, who helmed the golf squads at both schools during his 40-plus season coaching career that earned him a place in the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. In his second stint as head coach of the Raiders, Lengyel passed away suddenly on Jan. 7 at age 74. Monday's matchup was the first time anyone could recall the two teams meeting without Lengyel's presence. "Those are enormous shoes to fill, and there's no way I can fill them," Enfield coach Todd Zenczak said. "He was a tremendous guy, and I can't …
