A Lifestyles Expo, a Lasagna Dinner, a Military Tribute, and More in Enfield This Weekend

Lifestyles Expo
Saturday, 9 a.m. - The expo will be held rain or shine, with a wide range of activities and resources for all ages. General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors 60-up, and $20 for a family. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Refreshments will be available for-sale in the Star Hill dome throughout the day. Free on-site parking will be provided. The Lifestyles Expo CT will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a sprint triathlon consisting of a 300-yard swim in the indoor Star Hill pool, a 10-mile bicycle ride and 5K run in the beautiful Tolland County countryside. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the huge Star Hill dome will include multiple Expo venues. There will be an all-day health fair with free flu shots, free seminars, live demonstrations of da Vinci robotic surgery technology, and resources on fitness, diet, strength and power, and healthcare. An all-day financial forum will have free seminars and resources on college planning, retirement, and investment strategies. The all-day home show includes free seminars and resources on parenting, gardening, renovations and entertainment. An all-day educational forum offers free seminars and resources on picking the right school, tutoring and job placement. The all-day leisure expo will feature free seminars and resources on cars, social media and communications, vacationing, boating and sports. The Expo will also feature a Star Theatre with speakers including former UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, former Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee, Dr. Dan Veltri and Scott Cross. A Kid’s World with secure drop-off area will feature indoor soccer, dodge ball, Nuke Em, petting zoo, obstacle course, bouncy house, and special appearances by Rocky the RockCat and Sonar from the Wolf Pack. Train rides will also be available at $3 each. Weather permitting, the Re/Max hot air balloon will provide free outdoor rides. With Christmas season around the corner, a JesusFest Pavilion will feature displays by area churches, ministries and businesses, a Christmas crèche, Christian art gallery, Creation Station science area, Christian book-signing area, and prayer tent. Warrior 5K
Saturday, 9 a.m. - This event will raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members and support the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that takes a holistic approach when serving warriors and their families to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and race will begin at 10:30 a.m., rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under, and a special team rate of $80 for up to five registrants. All race participants and supporters are invited back the Greenwood Center afterwards to enjoy music, food, awards, raffles, and more. A Veterans Day observance ceremony will be held  before the start of the event at 10 a.m. with special tributes to all those who serve and have served our country. Every participant registered prior to the day of the event is guaranteed to receive a commemorative Longmeadow’s Warriors 5k Run/Walk t-shirt. Lasagna Dinner for Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Saturday, 5 p.m. - Delicious hunks of lasagna accompany salad and bread, ice cream and brownies will be served. Neighbors Helping Neighbors is an organization which helps needy families with lifesaving assistance. This year the funds are especially critical as most of the funding has been depleted by an especially large number of requests. Help your neighbor and enjoy a great meal. Adults are $10, children ages 6 to 12 are $4, children under 6 are free, and the family maximum is $25.

Hartford Area Roller Derby

Saturday, 6 p.m. - This is the last chance to see Hartford Area Roller Derby  until 2014. The Hartford Wailers will take on the Worcester Warriors and the Beat City Bedrockers will take on the Worcester Warheads. There will be food, drinks, raffles, vendors, and more. Cherie Currie - Voice of The Runaways
Saturday, 9:30 p.m. - Cherie Currie is an artist, an actress, a singer, and an author. She began her career in the legendary band, The Runaways alongside Joan Jett and Lita Ford. As the lead singer of the first all-female rock/punk band, she helped stretch the boundaries for future female artists. Currie's story is told in Neon Angel (It Books/Harper Collins) was the subject of the recent film, The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart as Jett and Dakota Fanning as Currie. Currie recently went back in the studio with Matt Sorum of Velvet Revolver and Guns n Roses. With Sorum producing and on drums, together they created and album featuring guest appearances from the likes of Slash, Billy Corgan, Julliette Lewis, Duff McKagan, and more. A Tribute to Veterans, Servicemen, and Servicewomen
Sunday, 10 a.m. - Have a chance to meet and talk one-on-one with many veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Tour the museum’s three large display hangars with its extensive collection of vintage aircraft including many military aircraft such as the F-100 Super Sabre, the WWII Thunderbolt, the Huey Helicopter, the Cobra Helicopter, the Grumman Wildcat, the Grumman Hellcat and the B-29 Superfortress. Enjoy the special WWI exhibit that will be set up for the day. Take a close-up look at the Museum’s two WWI aircraft and five antique engines from that era. Numerous artifacts including uniforms, gear, and a WWI machine gun will be on display. Enter the cockpits of several aircraft to be open for the day including the WWII P-47 Thunderbolt, the UH-1 Huey Helicopter, the F-100 Super Sabre, the Cobra AH-1 helicopter and more. Meet with representatives of numerous veterans’ organizations who will provide information on the services they provide. These will include the Connecticut Department of Veteran Affairs, AMVETS, House of Heroes Connecticut, Connecticut National Guard Airman & Family Readiness Program and New Haven Vet Center with their 40 ft. Mobile Vet Center. Also, the museum’s Flight Sim Spot full-flight simulator experience will be available throughout most of the day. For the convenience of visitors, a food vendor will be on site serving sandwiches, snacks and beverages. Admission is $12 for ages 12 and up, $11 for seniors 65 and up, and $6.50 for ages 4 to 11. Children under 4 are admitted free. On this day, and on each day in November, veterans and active service personnel will be admitted free of charge.
