Milford, Connecticut – A 16-year-old high school student was stabbed to death the day of the junior prom. A 16-year-old classmate is in custody.

Several media outlets reported that students at the school said Maren Sanchez was stabbed to death by a boy she refused to go with to the prom. Police have not confirmed the information, and the suspect's name was being withheld because he is a juvenile.

Sanchez was attacked at about 7:15 a.m. in a hallway at Jonathan Law High School, The Hartford Courant reported, and part of the attack was witnessed by a staff member of the school. Sanchez was taken to Bridgeport Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:43 a.m.

Sanchez was described as an honor student who was active in the school community.

"Her time with us was much too short but her spirit will be with us forever. I ask you to please join me in praying for Maren, her friends, her family and all of our school community as we cope with this horrific event," Jonathan Law High School principal Fran Thompson stated in an email to students, according to Tom Cleary at Scribble Live.

Sanchez was described as a popular and well-respected student. Video of Sanchez performing "Home" by Phillip Phillips at a school event is attached to this post.

Milford Mayor Ben Blake said Jonathan Law High School will be open and counseling services will be available throughout the weekend.

"Our hearts go out to the family of Maren Sanchez, the 16 year old junior at Jonathan Law High School who passed away this morning, and to those also affected by this tragedy."

I agree Trish you can't trust the media but this talk of yours about Maren is ridiculous. I personally know a first responder and a student that was sending texts right after it happened. Stop your nonsense about this.

Ignore Trish...She's from Jersey, probably Newark, and most likely spends her time sniffing the emissions from all those factory smokestacks.

I would like to go on record, not everyone in NJ is warped, and twisted. I do see how Trisha makes us look, one bad apple etc........

@John...The people on this tread all live in Milford and some have connections to this girl, some more than others. Trish, and those like her, should have the human decency to take their self-centrist views to another thread.
