When "Little" Means "A Lot"

Most everywhere you turn, there is pressure to grow in number. Serve more, draw more in, raise more, and you are a success! When I took on the role of pastor for an admittedly small, intimate congregation, some viewed this as a lesser choice. Following one who said, "When two are more are gathered," however, I am committed to the presence and role of small congregations in our communities and lives.

Earlier this fall, after sharing a parable of Jesus, I provided to each of our members and friends an envelope. The envelopes were filled with money--"filled" being a relative term. Some envelopes had a dollar; most had two; and a few fortunate members received $5, $10, and $25 in their envelopes. The challenge was simple--go out and change the world with something small.

Our members amazed me with their gestures. They observed, listened for opportunity, and took action--strangers' grocery debts were reduced, food ministries received one-time gifts and the promise of on-going support, large print books and other gifts were provided to seniors, a child in Tanzania is now being supported through monthly giving, organ donation was supported, and more.

In every story, the power of multiplication was at hand. A little became a lot as people increased their gifts themselves, pooled funds with others, or invited friends from elsewhere to be inspired by these efforts.

If you feel called to be part of a small community that wants to change the world to be a more loving, welcoming place for all, visit us at Enfield American Baptist Church. Our worship is held each Sunday at 10am. We're small in size, yet big in heart, and we'd love to have you join us!
