A series of thunderstorms put on a damper on the closing night of the 87th Enfield Italian Festival at the Mount Carmel Society grounds on Park Ave.
A brief but torrential thunderstorm forced cancellation of the traditional greased pole climb, then a second line of storms moved through shortly after 8 p.m., causing the evening's entertainment to be shut down, including Ticket to Ride, a Beatles tribute band.
Despite hot and humid conditions, the traditional Sunday morning festivities were held as scheduled. The day began with an outdoor Mass, spoken partially in Italian, followed by a continental breakfast. Society and Women's Auxiliary members then marched in a procession through the neighborhood streets, with a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel being pushed on a float.
