Weston Advances to Class M Title Game With 53-47 Upset of Enfield

Cinderella is still at the ball, and the stroke of midnight is not yet approaching.

The Weston High School boys basketball team kept its unlikely run through the Class M tournament going by defeating Enfield 53-47 in the semifinals Tuesday night at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven.

The Trojans will play Valley Regional in the finals this weekend at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Date and time have yet to be announced.

Weston entered the tournament seeded 23rd with a 10-10 record, but has defeated three higher-seeded opponents in winning its first four games to advance to the championship contest.

Wednesday's victim, sixth-seeded Enfield, hurt itself by missing 17 of 25 free throws.

"Foul shooting is not our strength, but that's kind of a mind-shaker there," Enfield head coach Cory O'Connell said. "We didn't step up and knock down shots like we needed to."

The Raiders fell into a 7-0 hole in the first minute and a half, but battled back to close within 9-8 on a pair of three-point baskets by Paul Lima near the end of the first quarter.

Weston came right back with back-to-back treys by Troy Flynn and Asher Lee-Tyson to open the second quarter. The Raiders tallied just two field goals in the period, leaving them trailing 24-13 at halftime.

Lee-Tyson scored the first four points after intermission to provide the Trojans their largest lead at 15 points. Enfield ran off a 6-0 run to close within nine heading into the final eight minutes.

Lima scored 12 points in the fourth quarter as Enfield closed to within six on three occasions, but clutch foul shooting by Weston sealed the victory. Charlie DiPasquale sank 11 free throws in the final period, leading the Trojans with 20 points in the game. Lee-Tyson finished with 12 points.

Lima took game-high scoring honors with 22, while Ra Preston contributed nine before fouling out with 2:14 to play.

Enfield, which played in the semifinals for the second time in three years, finished the season with a 22-5 record, including postseason action.
