Simsbury Skaters Outlast Fermi-Enfield, 4-2

Sean Gaffney scored two goals and Simsbury survived a Fermi-Enfield comeback with an insurance tally in the third period, sparking the Trojans to a 4-2 victory in CCC North ice hockey action Wednesday in Enfield.

Evan Ruszala opened the scoring for Simsbury with the only goal of the first period. Gaffney then netted both of his goals in the middle stanza, with his first coming just 17 seconds into the session after a Fermi-Enfield giveaway at the blue line.

Nick Varner got Fermi-Enfield on the board just past the halfway point of the second period, then Jason Despard made it a 3-2 contest with just 33 seconds left before the second intermission.

Patrick Driscoll capped the scoring for the Trojans with an unassisted goal 2:34 into the third period.

Simsbury outshot the hosts, 29-24.

The Trojans (7-6-1) moved over .500 for the first time all season, after getting off to an 0-5 start. Fermi-Enfield dropped to 7-8.

Both teams are back in action Saturday. Fermi-Enfield plays at West Haven at 1 p.m., while Simsbury hosts Windsor-Farmington-Avon at 6:15 p.m.
