Anthony O'Connell scored just 14 seconds into the second overtime period, which proved to be the game-winner as Fermi defeated previously-unbeaten Hartford Public 2-1 in CCC East high school boys soccer action Wednesday in Enfield.
"They're very good, very physical and very talented," Fermi head coach Jim Russell said of Hartford Public. "Their keeper was solid in goal."
Fermi goalkeeper Alex Zachary made seven saves, while Owls netminder Abner Hernandez stopped eight shots.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard for the first 65-plus minutes. Finally, Conor Glettenberg scored on a breakaway to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead with 14:15 to play in regulation time.
Hartford Public came right back to tie it five minutes later on a goal by Adonai Tinker. The final nine minutes were scoreless, necessitating a pair of five-minute overtime sessions.
After no scoring in the first extra period, Fermi charged right down the field at the start of the second overtime, with O'Connell putting a shot past Hernandez from 10 yards out. The Falcon defense held tough down the stretch, holding on for the victory.
Both teams have home games Friday at 3:45 p.m. Fermi (2-1) hosts Bloomfield, while Hartford Public (2-1) entertains Rocky Hill.
