Fans watching the first half of Friday's NCCC boys basketball game at Suffield High School must have thought they were watching Pete Carril's Princeton teams of the 1980s.
Suffield used a slow, methodical, ball-control offense to take away unbeaten Enfield's fast-paced game. The Raiders led 8-5 after one quarter, and 17-14 at halftime.
A 6-0 run to start the second half, highlighted by a reverse layup from Paul Lima following a steal, gave Enfield a nine-point advantage, and the Wildcats never got closer than two as the Raiders hung on for a 41-36 victory.
"(Suffield) had a game plan and they executed it to perfection," Enfield head coach Cory O'Connell said. "In the end, our guys did come together and hit some key foul shots, got some key rebounds and executed some key plays when we needed them."
A three-point shot by Tyron Williams brought the Wildcats within two with 2:41 to play, but Hugh Lindo, Trachone Preston and Lima combined to sink seven free throws in the final 1:08 to seal the Raiders' 11th straight win and maintain their perfect record.
"I think you can go up and down with them a little, but if you get carried away for a whole game, they're tough," Suffield head coach Dan Gatto said. "They have so many different scoring options, that if you go up and down, they're going to get you eventually."
Preston led Enfield with 15 points, despite being double-teamed often by Suffield's stifling defense. Lindo had 11 points and Lima added 10 for the Raiders.
Eddie Danek took game scoring honors with 19 points for Suffield (6-5), while Williams had 13.
Both teams return to action on the road Tuesday. Enfield visits Canton at 7 p.m., while Suffield travels to Windsor Locks for a 6:30 p.m. start.
