SAFE SCHOOLS

The decision has been made to place armed guards in our schools, hoping to protect our children from gun violence while they are in the buildings.  Yet, the danger of experimenting with mind altering and highly addictive drugs has been a continuous problem for years and very little effort has been made to confront this problem, mainly because the administration and staff feel it is their first responsibility to protect the image of the school, along with their careers.  The parents wish to protect their kids via confidentiality and privacy to avoid  any damage to their reputations.  Our past three presidents have admitted to drug use at one point in their young and vulnerable years, so we can not use the excuse that this is something to hide for fear of jeopardizing their future  success.  I am sure if you follow the trail with the youth who have first experimented with and continued to engage in the dangerous habit of drug abuse while they were young students in our schools you will see that many lives have been lost or futures ruined.  Yet, because of false pride we distance ourselves from even talking openly about this.  This troubles me greatly, as I know that peer pressure is the most influencing contagion among our young, vulnerable and curious kids. Until this danger is allowed to come out into the sunshine, it will continue and more and more kids will become innocent (albeit immature) victims.  That is the way addiction works...It is insidious, non-judgmental and guarantees a possible lifetime of misery not only for the addicted, but for the families as well.  Let's cut the clap-trap and let these kids know that we have their backs and drugs are forbidden in our schools.
