Enfield Students Win State Scholarships

This year marks the first annual Connecticut Higher Education Trust scholarship.

State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier recently announced that 200 Connecticut high school seniors will be recipients of the inaugural CHET Advance Scholarship, including two Enfield students.

In total, 3,635 applications were filed, and the winners are from from 85 public high schools, three independent high schools, 10 parochial high schools and two home school students.

Enfield's Ariel V. Gigeours and Bryan Gillespie were among the winners announced.

The winners were randomly selected, according to Napier's office.

Each winner selected will receive $2,500 to help pay for college.

"[The scholarship] will help these students meet the ever-rising costs of higher education, and allow them to spend less time worrying about how to pay for college and more time to focus on getting into college and staying in college," said Nappier, who is the trustee for the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET).

According to Nappier's office, the first CHET scholarship comes at a time when there has been a decline in federal aid and tuition costs are at an all-time high.

"Affordability continues to be a crucial concern for students and families. We are far from making college accessible to all students," Nappier said.
