Report: State's Attorney Refuses To Sign Arrest Warrant for Enfield Police Officer

The officer was accused of beating a suspect who was reportedly resisting arrest in April.

A Connecticut State's Attorney has refused to approve an arrest warrant for an Enfield Police officer who's accused of police brutality.

According to an NBC Connecticut report, State’s Attorney Gail P. Hardy refused to sign an arrest warrant application seeking to charge Officer Mathew Worden with third-degree assault and fabricating or tampering with physical evidence.

The incident that led Enfield Police to seek charges happened just before 10 p.m. April 1 near the River Street boat launch. Warden, who was on duty at the time, is accused of assaulting Mark-Andrew Maher of Windsor. Maher was accused of being in the park after it closed and having alcohol, which is prohibited at all times, and after a struggle with officers, was arrested on charges of assault on a police officer and interfering with an officer, according to the report.

Maher filed a police brutality complaint  against “three or four” unnamed officers with the department on April 6. Maher was also arrested on the date in question and charged with assault on a police officer and interfering with an officer.

In deciding on whether to approve the arrest warrant, Hardy reviewed more information beyond the application supplied by the Enfield Police Department, according to the report, which can be read in its entirety here.
