Police Nab More Than 40 Drivers for Seat Belt, Phone Violations on Wednesday

It was part of a federally funded enforcement effort.

Vernon police and members of Metro Traffic Services handed out tickets for 48 seat belt and cell phone infractions during a concentrated enforcement action on Wednesday morning.

The enforcement effort took place on Whitney T. Ferguson Road, near the exit 66 on-ramp for Interstate-84 westbound. It was paid for with federal Click It or Ticket program grant money.

Vernon police spokesman William Meier said that in addition to the 40-plus  tickets, four vehicles were towed away for driver's license or registration  violations.

Four child car seats were also inspected by a member of the Vernon Fire Department, Meier said. The car seats were in working order and the children were restrained properly, Meier said.

Cars were only pulled over if an officer acting as a spotter noticed a violation, Meier said.

Meier said residents can expect more intensified enforcement through Dec. 16.

In2008, I was harrassed by a police blockage on the bridge that takes US 1 over the Hpusatonic River......from the Devon secion of Milford to Stratford. I was going to a strip mall in Stratford. Didn't like the inconvenience. Neither did a lot of other people. I don't shop in Stratford anymore. Half the stores in that area have closed or are doing poorly. Do you really want to bother people out to spend hard earned money with harrassment?

Typical of the Vernon P.D. That is their way of spreading holiday cheer, when all those cops are making big $$ in overtime writing out those tickets. Thanks guys !!!!!

At least you now know that your Police Department is out and doing something . Or would you want them to park somewhere out of sight until called. Then you can call in to complain that the Police are sitting around doing nothing. Anyone who drives has seen people on the phone and how their driving suffered for it. As to seat belts, if you want to risk the added injuries if involved in an accident, go ahead. Just hope you have insurance so I don't have to foot the bill.
