Police: Death of 18-Month-Old Child Believed to be Accidental

The youngster was found unresponsive Monday afternoon, and died at a hospital shortly thereafter.

Enfield police are investigating the death of an 18-month-old child who was found unresponsive Monday afternoon, but the death is believed to be accidental, a police official said.

Emergency personnel were summoned to 19 Cottage Green at 3:49 p.m. Monday, and found the youngster "unresponsive," Det. Lt. Willie Pedemonti said.

The child was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, and was pronounced dead later that afternoon. An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday in Boston, Pedemonti said.

The state police major crimes unit was called to assist Enfield police in processing the scene.

"At this point in time, it may be an accidental death," Pedemonti said. "Our hearts go out to the family."
