A man cleaning out a garage behind a Pearl Street house discovered what appeared to be a pair of grenades, police said.
The discovery occurred around 4 p.m. Monday, and and rushed to the garage behind 119 Pearl Street, at the corner of New King Street.
Officers and firefighters suspected the items were grenades, and the bomb squad was called, Deputy Police Chief Gary Collins said.
Police blocked off Pearl and New King streets as the bomb squad retrieved the material. An alert was sent out to residents of Thompsonville through the town's Everbridge notification system, Collins said.
The scene was cleared and the streets were re-opened around 5:20 p.m.
