UPDATE: 11:10 a.m.

Contractors installing fiber optic cable struck a gas service Tuesday morning, causing a leak that forced a temporary evacuation of five businesses and closed three streets in the Thompsonville section of Enfield.

Caronna's Market, Caronna's Package Store, Diana's Bakery, Gladys Alterations and the John Maciolek American Legion Post 154 were all evacuated shortly after the leak was reported at 8:34 a.m, according to Mark Zarcaro, public information oficer for the Enfield fire departments.

Gas readings were detected in some buildings, as well as the manholes and piping from Central Street to High Street. Yankee Gas was on scene to shut off the gas and make repairs, Zarcaro said.

The scene was cleared by 10:10 a.m., Zarcaro said.
