Obama Backs Gay Marriage [With Poll]

The president told ABC News that his thinking had "evolved" on the subject. How do you feel about his decision?

The day after voters in North Carolina approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman, President Obama told ABC News on Wednesday that he now supports gay marriage.

The president — who still supports letting states decide the issue on their own — said his personal views had gone through an "evolution" based on conversations with family and friends and the views of his own daughters.

"They are much more comfortable with it," the president told Robin Roberts in an interview to be shown on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday. Excerpts will air tonight on ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer."

”You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples," Obama said in the interview. "There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

How do you feel about Obama's change of heart? Take our poll and tell us more in the comments.

I applaud the President's decision to speak out in support of civil and humanitarian rights because that's what support for GAY MARRIAGE is. Wake up and take a look at a calendar. It's too bad that people are and will continue to get this twisted - it's not a political issue. It's a matter of equal rights and equal protection. North Carolina's ban against gay marriage shows just how far the South has come since the Civil War. If some Southern politicians could figure out how to do it, they would likely reinstitute slavery. I'll play devil's advocate and say that the same supporters of the ban on gay marriage weren't celebrating the day Obama was elected. Now more than ever the President needs the support of the Democratic constituency. He has gone out on a long and shaky limb to show the world who he really is and is being excoriated for it. Justin - I applaud your post and thoroughly support it. Unfortunately you need more than 2 working brain cells to be able to understand it and those who would be most educated by it are 2 brain cells short.

Mac, you know what else has been defined and understood for millennia around the world and in all cultures? Slavery- which may possibly pre-date marriage. So-by your logic i guess we should still have slavery?

Obama has gone crazy. He knows he is not going to be married to another boy and cares less when his lovely daughters do not marry men with whom to beget children. What does Michelle say on this

"If some Southern politicians could figure out how to do it, they would likely reinstitute slavery. " That's a very presumptuous and dangerous statement Mrs. Jett. Also, when were we allowed to personally attack people on this forum? Especially by a paid blogger here... Let me ask you this Miss Jett; Do you support adults marrying children? Because that is quite normal and accepted in many cultures and countries - why do we discriminate against that here?
