Date of Program: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 7:00 PM
Visit the Enfield Public Library on Wednesday, September 11th at 7:00 PM for, The Rocket’s Red Glare, Connecticut, and the War of 1812, presented by historian, Dr. Glenn S. Gordinier.
The illustrated talk The Rocket’s Red Glare, Connecticut, and the War of 1812 will examine how that oft forgotten war relates to the Nutmeg State. Linked closely through trade with the warring French and British, Connecticut farmers, merchants and sailors profited, and suffered, before 1812. Eventually, local warriors practiced asymmetrical warfare against the Royal Navy in the name of patriotism and profit. Then, with the war’s end Connecticut’s innovators led the proud young nation into a new era.
Presenter, Dr. Glenn S. Gordinier, of Stonington CT, is the senior historian at Mystic Seaport where he teaches for the Williams College maritime studies program. Specializing in maritime history, he is also on the faculty of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point. Dr. Gordinier’s compelling presentation is based on his recent book, The Rockets’ Red Glare, the War of 1812 and Connecticut. He is also the author of the popular memoir entitled, Surfing Cold Water: a New Englander’s Off-Season Obsession.
Dr. Gordinier will have books on hand for sale and signing. All programs at the Enfield Public Library are free and all are welcome.
