Community Corner

National Solar Tour and Green Building Open House

Date of Program:  Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM

On Saturday, October 5th at 1:00 PM, the Enfield Clean Energy Committee is leading a bike tour of solar installations in the community.   This special opportunity will allow interested home-owners, business owners, educators and interested others to take an up-close look at homes with solar energy systems and other sustainable features.

Open to everyone with a bike, the event will begin at the Enfield Public Library on Middle Road with a short introduction to the work of the Clean Energy Committee and the many resources on energy available at the library.  The 14-mile, easy-paced tour will cover four homes with solar electricity, solar hot water, geothermal, composting, and other features.  It will end at the Weymouth Road Fire Station to see the solar electric system there, hosted by deputy fire Chief Paul Januszewski.  Slow-biking participants may join for a portion of the tour.

Acting Committee Chair Melissa Everett notes that, “With over two dozen solar homes in town, Enfield is primed to scale up the use of this increasingly commonplace technology.  The tour will bring together curious citizens who can help each other learn about options and resources.”

According to solar homeowner Steve Moriarty, who has opened his home for the tour annually, “People are constantly looking for a better deal to save energy and money, and the price of solar is coming down all the time.  Many people are extremely attracted to energy innovations but they need a place to start in learning what’s out there.  This event is so useful because it allows real people to put their hands on the technology and get all their questions answered.”
