Meet the Author Jessica Handly

Date of Program:  Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Visit the Enfield Public Library on Wednesday, April 9th at 7:00 PM to meet local author, Jessica (Barone) Handly and discuss her new novel, Wolfwalker.

Wolfwalker is the tale of a young woman’s rising strength in the face of adversity.  Wolfwalker, a fantasy set in Medieval Ireland, is not your typical werewolf novel…Long ago, clans of wolfwalkers dwelt in the Green Isle.  Born as wolfwalkers, they shift forms between wolf and man at any time of the month-unlike the bitten ones who Change only at the full moon.  Fiachra’s clan is ruled by tradition and hierarchy and it is to this world that a Halfling girl is born.  Fein, daughter of Fiachra (a wolfwalker) and Gaela (a woman), cannot Change, but her suitor, Ulfir, sets a plan in motion that will set her inner wolf free.  In order to bring out Fein’s wolf, Ulfir must bite her.  This careless action results in Ulfir’s exile from the clan.  Fein, newly Changed, must stifle her feelings for Ulfir and return to her duties to the clan and to her aging father.

Jessica Handly was raised on tales of the old country.  As a youth, her imagination soared from the crypts of Sicily to the banshees of Galway Bay.  An early interest in storytelling was sparked from trips to such places as Vermont, and a love of classical music also contributed to the creative process.  Eventually, Jessica traveled abroad to places mentioned in her novels, such as France, Ireland, Italy, England and Scotland.

When Jessica isn’t writing, she is teaching English at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield, Connecticut.  She holds a Master’s of Arts in Liberal Arts, has worked as a professional writing tutor, held seminars on writer’s block, led fiction writing and journalism clubs, and has served as a reviewer and tutor for other authors.  Jessica feels her greatest achievement is that she has inspired young authors to read and write.
