Friends of the Enfield Library Meeting featuring local author Alice Godard Allen

Date of Program:  Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 7:00 PM

Visit the Enfield Public Library on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:00 PM for the Friends of the Enfield Library Meeting.  Enfield author, Alice Godard Allen, will be giving a presentation, and will have copies of her book, Colonel Augustus G. Hazard and the Hazard Powder Company on hand for sale and signing.

Allen tells the story of the Hazard Powder Company and the manufacture of black gunpowder.  The first powder mill was built by the Loomis Brothers in 1835 in Hazardville, Connecticut.  The mill was acquired by Colonel Augustus Hazard in 1843 and sold to the DuPont’s in the late 1800’s.  During the Civil War, 40 percent of the gunpowder used by the Union forces was manufactured here in the Connecticut Valley.  Allen also includes some little known events and pictures in her book to broaden the reader’s view on life in Hazardville and the Connecticut Valley during the 1800’s.
