For the Sake of the Country: Female Spies in the Civil War

Date of Program: Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Connecticut resident and American military historian, Matthew Bartlett, presents, For the Sake of the Country: Female Spies in the Civil War, at the Enfield Public Library on Wednesday, August 7 at 7:00 PM.
When you contemplate the various roles women played during the American Civil War, you might think of laundresses, cooks, fundraisers, nurses, uniform makers...but did you know one of the most important roles women played in the Civil War was as spies?  During this program, you will learn how four women helped to change the course of the war.  Their stories are so remarkable you might think they are fiction!
Presenter Matthew Bartlett became interested in American History while working as an organist, pianist, and music director for his church.  During his time working in the church, he took a trip with his wife to the battlefield of Gettysburg and was taken aback by the place.  Since then, he has surrounded himself with the topic of the American Civil War and the Gettysburg Campaign.  In early 2009, Matthew began writing a book to encompass the complete aspect of the campaign.  Originally intended as only a non-fiction source, Matthew added elements of historical fiction and his single book has grown into an 18 volume series.  Matthew holds a Master's degree in Military History from the American Military University and specializes in Civil War studies.  He lives in Meriden, Connecticut with his wife and their two cats, Aslan and Stonewall (yes, that Stonewall).
