'Historic Barns of Connecticut' — There's An App for That

A free iPhone app will take you on a virtual tour of the state's historic barns — and help you get there in person, too.

By Gary Jeanfaivre

Once again, technology puts the most interesting things at our finger tips. And this time it's an interactive, informative map of historic barns in Connecticut.

The app, CT Barns, is available for free in the App Store. In it, you can search for and view pics of the state's historic barns. It will also give you:

  • addresses and directions
  • hours and contact info
  • barn descriptions
  • tour amenities
  • architectural notes

According to the Historic Barns of Connecticut website, which is a project of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, there are more than 8,000 historic barns in the state. The effort to catalogue and preserve them is ongoing.

The state's barns are also celebrated in a new book, "Barns of Connecticut," by Markham Starr. Read more about his book in this article published by the Hartford Courant.
