UPDATE: One Dead in Suffield House Fire

Two people who lived in a house at 1489 Mapleton Ave. escaped and were treated for smoke inhalation.

Update, 7 a.m.

One person has been confirmed dead, according to WFSB-TV

A man and woman were transported to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield for treatment for smoke inhalation. A third person was found dead several hours later, the station reported.

Neighbors who live across the street told Patch a woman and her adult daughter live at the house, and the daughter's boyfriend moved in recently.

The 1,690 square foot clapboard house was built in 1915 and is owned by Patricia White Sikes, according to Suffield property records.

Update, 9:10 p.m.

A fire official said someone is "unaccounted for" at the scene of the fire, but would not confirm who that person is.

"We can say nothing beyond that, because I don't have the information on how many lived there, or whether they were home or not," District Fire Chief Tom Romano said.

Firefighters have not yet entered the house, as a team is checking the structural safety of the building, Romano said.

The first police officer to arrive at the scene reported seeing the entire first floor and the second floor rear portion of the house fully engulfed in flames.

Original Story

A raging fire engulfed a Mapleton Avenue home Wednesday evening, and witnesses say they fear a woman may be trapped inside.

The two-story home at 1489 Mapleton Ave. was still ablaze nearly an hour after the fire was reported around at 6:57 p.m.

At 8 o'clock, a middle-aged woman yelling "where is my daughter" was wheeled on a stretcher by Suffield EMS to a waiting ambulance.

Fire departments from Thompsonville and Windsor Locks are assisting Suffield firefighters.

Further details will be provided as they become available.
