In the mist of our national debate on whether or not certain high powered guns should be restricted for sale and for use, our country has seen its forth college shooting incident since Jan 1st. Today at a local Texas community college; three students shot at while studying inside the college library.
My personal belief is while we as citizens will always have the right to bare arms; our national gun culture is clearly contributing to the almost routine violence happening in our national schools. Every college student should have the ability to go to class to learn without the fear of being the victim of a gun related incident. I will never say we should ban all guns, but what does any law abiding citizen benefit from owning a Uzi or a AK-47? It does not take 30 rounds of bullets to kill a deer or a bear, and the answer to our national problems is not to plead ignorance and deny that we do not have a problem with guns in this country.
For it can be said that the opposite of a ignorant person is a knowledgeable person. The sole purpose of a college education is to combat ignorant facts and ignorant feelings that we in our society hold against different ideas and different feelings that we ourselves do not have.
I am personally getting a college education in the hopes that I can make my community a better place for all. But the future will not be as bright as it should be for future students in this country because if future generations will have attend school with great fear and anxiety, then fewer and fewer people will seek to be educated and more and more people will instead learn to become ignorant. Nobody should even be afraid of being a college student. For it is my strong personal belief that violent acts of vengeance should never be allowed to occur inside the classroom to being with.
To own pistols and rifles are one thing. We can not discuss nor should we consider banning those. But why have a weapon that can fire multiple rounds of bullets (I'm talking 20, 30 rounds) when surly one round of ammunition is all it really takes to stop an intruder or to kill a hunted animal?
My prayers go out to the people and families affected by this latest shooting. But we will all need more then prayers to prevent future tragedies. We need action!
