Nov. 29: Square Dance Day

Some facts about square dancing, to help commemorate Square Dance Day, November 29.

1. Today is Square Dance Day! This lively and energetic form of dancing is usually associated with rural living remains popular in the Western and Southern sections of the United States, and among seniors. A typical square consists of eight dancers, four couples performing such dance moves as the "Dosey Do" and "Promenade."

2. Square Dancing is an American innovation with it's roots in the folk dances from British Isles. Early New England Settlers brought the folk dances with them, as the different cultures mingled, the dancing took on a character all its own. The earliest square dances did not have a "caller." The "caller," usually not a participant in the dance, acts as the choreographer, yelling out the series of cues or dance steps for the dancers, with a bit of witty banter thrown in. Even though square dancing has spread throughout the globe, calling is always done in English.

By the early 20th century, square dancing's popularity waned, but came back in style with force in the 1930s due partly to Henry Ford's New England revival initiative. By the 1940s the fad reached huge heights of popularity, which persists to this day. For more on the history and development of square dancing, click here.
