News From the Enfield Senior Center

The latest happenings and upcoming events.

Join me for a tour of the Enfield Senior Center on Tuesday, August 16 at 10 a.m.  If you have never been to the Senior Center, this is a perfect time to find out about services, programs and activities that are available to you.  There is no need to register, just meet me in the Senior Center Library for “Welcome to Enfield Senior Center.”

The first sign up dates for September and October classes will be Tuesday, August 16, starting at 8:30 am for residents and Tuesday, August 23 at 8:30 am for nonresidents.  The upcoming classes are in the August newsletter that should have arrived in homes last week.  There are newsletters available in the Senior Center office and online.

On a hot day, indoor activities at the Senior Center are cool!  Drop in for Billiards, Bridge, Canasta, Cribbage, Dominoes, Bingo, Hand & Foot, Mahjong, Pinochle, Setback, or Wii Bowling.  You can even just drop by for a cup of coffee.

A noon meal is served weekdays at the Senior Center at the Community Cafe.  You just need to make your reservations by calling 860-763-7428 by noon the day before you want to have lunch. Please feel free to leave a message.  The suggested donation is $2 for a hot, served meal.  Enjoy lunch with friends in air-conditioned comfort.

Attention all Wii Bowlers!  Aetna is sponsoring a National Wii Bowling Tournament.  The winner of the regional tournament will play the winner of the other three regions at the September AARP Convention in a virtual competition.  On Friday, August 26, at 1 p.m., at the Enfield Senior Center, teams of 4 participants, will rival other teams to find the highest team score in the region.  Put your team together and register in the Enfield Senior Center office.  Participants must be 50 and over.

Wii won!  The Enfield Wii Wildcats won the 3rd Annual Invitational Wii Bowling Tournament at the Sullivan Senior Center in Torrington, CT.  This was the second year in a row that the Enfield team won the tournament.  Congratulations!

Watch the opera Rigoletto on Thursday, August 11 at 5:30 p.m.  Mike Cascia shares his love of opera with those who are new to Giuseppe Verdi’s work.  There is no charge for the movie. 

Every summer, the Enfield Senior Center is proud to host an entertaining musical event with our own Goldtones.  The Goldtones Summer Concert is always a joyful way to spend a summer afternoon.  Tickets are now available for the Sunday, August 7, 2 p.m. performance for $5 per person.  Stay for a refreshing dessert following the performance.

Movie and Hot Dog Night, on Thursday, August 4, features the movie “127 Hours”.  This is an incredible survival story of Aron Ralston who became trapped alone in a Utah canyon.  Tickets are $5 per person with dinner and $2 for just the movie.  Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. followed by the movie at 6 p.m.

Organize and De-Clutter Your Home - Wednesday, August 3 at 1 p.m. - Sponsored by the Visiting Nurse and Health Services of CT.  Do all of the things in your life overwhelm you?  Do you know what to do with paperwork?  Come and learn techniques to simplify and reduce the time-draining clutter in your home.  Professional Organizer, Faith Manierre, of Busy Bees Professional Organizing, will discuss organizing and how to let go.  Learn the secrets of living an organized life.

Healthy Aging with Dr. Maria Renna – Wednesday, August 10 at 1 p.m. - Dr. Renna specializes in Geriatric Medicine and will discuss how you can navigate through the aging process.

Are You Ready for Knee Surgery? – Wednesday, August 24 at 1 p.m. Presented by Dr. Nagarkatti, Orthopedic Surgeon, Sponsored by Blair Manor.
