Area Residents Enjoy Day on the Farm

Enfield residents helped to celebrate Suffield's Hilltop Farm Monday afternoon during the Tenth Annual Event to celebrate that town's farming history.

Cows mooed, ponies pranced and kids played in the dirt under sunny skies during the Tenth Annual Farm Fest at Hilltop Farm.

The farming festival on the grounds of the old Hendee dairy property is hosted by the Friends of the Farm at Hilltop and featured a tractor parade, skillet toss, blacksmith booth and plenty of food and fun.

"My 3-year-old loves horses and cows and tractors so it was fun for him," said Cristin Wojtas, who attended the event with sons Logan and Gavin and her husband, Matt.

"The food was good," said Matt Wojtas. "There's some really good chocolate milk."

Food seemed to be a small issue this year, with many guests waiting for 30 minutes for burgers and pulled pork sandwiches, but otherwise the day seemed to go off without a hitch.

"The attendance is great," Sam Coatti, of FOFAH, said. "The weather is key."

"God knew what was going on today so we had beautiful weather," Sharon Zapolski said.

The Friends of the Farm at Hilltop formed in 2002 to save George Hendee’s 20,000-square-foot dairy barn from sale and possible demolition. Since then, improvements have been made and several festivals held throughout the year including the Farm Fest, Harvest Dinner and the Hendee Day and Indian Motorcycle Rally.
