SOMERS EDUCATION FOUNDATION HOSTS ANNUAL MEETING

Somers Education Foundation recently held its 2013 Annual Meeting at the home of Kathy and Bud Devlin.  Foundation Board Members,town and state leaders, and other foundation supporters attended the meeting.  The Somers Education Foundation is a not-for-profit organization supporting innovative projects and programs that enhance student learning in Somers public schools. 

Lou Bachetti, Foundation co-founder and President, and who passed away on July 26 was recognized for his outstanding leadership and friendship to the Foundation and its Board.  Lou guided the Foundation for nine years as its leader, achieving the goal of raising $250,000 in the Foundation’s endowment fund within its first ten years. Foundation Board Directors Dr. Paul Salva, MD, Pediatric Pulmonologist and co-founder, was elected to a fourth term and Liz Iadarola, Physical Therapist and Chair of the Board’s Grant Review Committee, was elected to a second term.  Geissler's Supermarkets, Rockville Bank and Dan Roulier were also recognized for their outstanding support of the Foundation. 

Since its inception nine years ago, the Foundation has raised $459,745 and has awarded over 130 grants to the Somers Public Schools for innovative programs and projects.   During the 2012 – 2013 school year, forty grants totaling more than $27,000 were awarded.  These grants include:

·       Mimeo Teach Technology – State of the art technology magnetically attaches to a white board turning it into an interactive learning device that motivates our youngest learners.

·       Tech Robotics – Lego Mindstorm NXT 2.0 robotics program teaches middle school students about robotic concepts through interactive excercises.

·       The Spartan School Store – A school store run by the high school Business and Special Education students providing the opportunity to learn business skills, develop self-confidence and leadership skills.
