Cover Cropping and Crop Rotation Workshop August 29th

Simsbury— Join the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut (CT NOFA) and Eero Ruutilla, a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist for UCONN Cooperative Extension, at the Community Farm of Simsbury for an evening workshop on Cover Cropping and Crop Rotation. Eero Ruutilla is currently a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist for UCONN Cooperative Extension, working with Connecticut's talented community of beginner farmers as part of a new Scaling Up Program. He is also the Technical Assistance & Incubator Farm Coordinator for 3 incubator farm sites in Massachusetts for the New Entry Sustainable Farming Program and has 22 years experience as farm manager at Nesenkeag Farm, a 65 acre certified organic nonprofit farm in southern NH.  The workshop will show how cover crops can fit into a New England vegetable crop operation. Eero will demonstrate via photographs windows of opportunity for utilizing cover crop rotations to build healthy soils while suppressing weeds, insects, & disease.. Also learn how cover cropping help improve the soil and manage fallow areas between crops.
 
Community Farm of Simsbury is a collaborative organization which promotes education and local agriculture, while practicing sound environmental stewardship, preserving the Town Farm, and benefiting those in need. The community farm hosts a variety of sustainable farming programs including summer and school year programming for children, an incubator farmer program and other special events.
 
The workshop is made possible by a grant from the National Institute for Food and Agriculture through the USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program.
