Zeb Olko Receives College Scholarship

Enfield resident attends George Mason University.

Zeb Olko, 19, a resident of Enfield, has been awarded a college scholarship by the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress (CDSC).

Olko, who has Down syndrome, attends George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.  In the spring, he will intern in the office of Connecticut Rep. Joseph Courtney, and plans to become a disability rights advocate.

It is only in recent years that people with intellectual disabilities have begun attending post-secondary programs. Dr. Judy Itzkowitz, an educational consultant in private practice for 24 years, said, “A lot of people do not see college as a viable possibility for individuals with intellectual disabilities, but it is. Individuals with intellectual disabilities benefit enormously from being educated with their peers without disabilities in general education environments, and with supplementary aides and services throughout their school experience. Some people refer to this as ‘full inclusion.’ Attending college should be an option for all, including those with intellectual disabilities. It is an experience that supports individuals in developing the skills they need to live independently and to make contributions to society.”

Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. All people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate and is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses.

The Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress is a private, non-profit, advocacy organization that promotes opportunity, equity and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The CDSC provides support to new parents of babies with Down syndrome, sponsors workshops and social activities for its members and holds an annual statewide convention for parents and professionals. Activities are funded entirely by member contributions and charitable donations from individuals and businesses.
