Third-Period Rally Lifts Conard Past Fermi-Enfield, 3-2

Chieftains come back from 2-0 deficit to post victory in Enfield.

Jack Wilson tied the score just 54 seconds into the third period, and Dom Sullivan netted the game-winner exactly two minutes later, lifting Conard past Fermi-Enfield 3-2 in CCC North hockey action Wednesday at the Enfield Twin Rinks.

Just as in the first meeting between the two squads (a 6-4 Fermi-Enfield victory on Dec. 20), a first-period goal by Brendan Lemire and a second-period tally by Avery Boissy gave Fermi-Enfield a 2-0 lead.

"We were up 2-0 on them last time, but the difference was we got the third goal," Fermi-Enfield head coach Frank Genovese said. "This time, they got the third."

Conard's Danny Kycia cut the deficit in half with 3:36 left in the middle period, then the early strikes by Wilson and Sullivan in the third pushed the Chieftains in front to stay.

"We need to find a way to keep playing consistently," Conard head coach Chris Rice said. "We came off a big win (3-2 over South Windsor on Jan. 4), which definitely seemed like the spark we needed, but followed up with a loss (3-2 at Simsbury on Jan. 7). Now we got a win and we've got to keep this momentum going; we're five wins short of the states, which is a goal of ours, and we've got to just keep plugging away."

Fermi-Enfield pulled goaltender Aaron Lickwar in favor of a sixth attacker in the final minute, but was unable to beat Conard netminder Charlie Fisher.

The Chieftains outshot Fermi-Enfield, 34-25.

"We did not come with any kind of A-game or any kind of pushback tonight," Genovese said. "Give credit to Conard, they took us out of that, and part of it was we didn't seem like we were ready."

Both teams return to the ice Saturday. Conard (3-6) hosts Daniel Hand at 1 p.m. at the Veteran's Rink, while Fermi-Enfield (4-5) takes on East Catholic at 7 p.m. at the Champions Skating Center in Cromwell.
