Three Enfield schools are currently in a Level 1 lockdown as a precautionary measure due to a potentially dangerous situation just across the Connecticut River in Suffield.
Enfield High School principal Tom Duffy said he received a phone call from the Enfield Police Department at 6:55 Tuesday morning, advising him of a suspect being tracked by Suffield.
Police Chief Carl Sferrazza said a student at the Lincoln Culinary Institute in Suffield had threatened to harm people early this morning, and police in that town were searching for him.
"There is no evidence to indicate this suspect is anywhere near Enfield," Sferrazza said.
Due to the proximity of Suffield to Enfield, police advised the high school, Enfield Street School and the Montessori School to go into Level 1 lockdown mode, Duffy said.
Upon arrival at the building, students were immediately directed to their rooms, doors were locked and minimal movement within the building was allowed, Duffy said.
A perimeter observation was established by police, and students were allowed to proceed to their next classes. No one was allowed to exit the building, Duffy said.
At 8:30 a.m., the lockdown was still in effect, but Duffy said he had been informed that the suspect was tracked to the Windsor Locks area.
He said he expected to receive an update at 9 a.m. "Hopefully, we'll release the lockdown at that time," he said.
