Kiner's Korner: Jon Huntsman the Alternative
Bill Kiner talks about his choice as the best Republican candidate for the presidency.
Maybe I am just a political junkie, and have a great fascination with the presidential debates. Or maybe I just care about our nation and want to understand what candidates for the highest office in the land are saying. You really don't have to be A Democrat, a Republican, or Libertarian to love our country and want the best for America. Ask anyone what they believe to be the most pressing issue in America today, and most would respond the economy and jobs. When you search deeper and ask what is it about American government that bothers you the most, you'll probably get an answer like "many elected officials care more about getting elected and reelected than they care about us-the American people".
We as Americans want the best for America. That's a given. We don't want political bickering, blatant partisanship, and nitpicking to take center stage. But that is what we are stuck with today. That is why Congress's approval rating is so low. It might surprise many of you that I am placing the blame all around: to the White House, to Congress, to the 1%, and to those Americans who have voted (or have not bothered to vote) to put some of these "clowns" in office. I am not using the word clowns to be mean funny. The health of our nation is too serious to be taken lightly.
I watched the Republican debate this week sponsored by NBC. These were all Republicans on stage and they could not help themselves as they tried to destroy each other's credibility. How can we expect these presidential hopefuls, if one were to win the White House, to put partisanship aside and work with every one for a better America if they can't even get along with each other? As I watch these Republican presidential hopefuls trying to trash each other, I can't help but think that this mean spirit could carry to the White House. What then? We would be left in the same sorry predicament that we are in now.
We need a leader, not a terminator. We need someone who is bright, someone who can lead, and someone who cares more about America than he does about himself (or herself).
The only candidate that I saw on stage this week that fits that ideal is Governor Jon Huntsman. Governor Huntsman was the only candidate who did not take delight in "I gotcha" politics. His responses to all the questions were honest and not divisive. It drives me nuts when candidates skirt the question and just deliver their canned responses that have nothing to do with the question just asked.
Look, I am a registered Democrat and I can take a hit from anyone out there who says that I just want Obama to win and I that I am suggesting the weakest candidate to run against him. Not so. If I believe, this November, that Mr. Huntsman, or another Republican would make a better president that Mr. Obama, I would vote for that person. That is a fact, and that is the way I feel.
Americans are turned off by our image of politics today-turned off to the image of win by any means possible-turned off to the mean spirit exhibited by many of our politicians today. We want, and we demand a leader who can once more bring our divided nation together. We want a president who is color blind to blue and red (as symbols of R and D states). We have had great leaders in the past who have helped to make our country great. We demand nothing less today.

Interesting article Bill, but I don't think Huntsman has a snowball's chance....and Obama would likely clobber him in the general election. Very slim chance the Republicans nominate him. Good analysis however....
