Alexander Edges Tallarita For 58th District Nomination

Incumbent says she will "definitely primary" to retain her seat.

A Marine Corps officer narrowly edged a seven-term state representative at the Democratic convention for the 58th House Assembly District Tuesday.

David Alexander received 21 votes to 20 for incumbent Rep. Kathy Tallarita in the Council Chambers at Enfield Town Hall.

"I am honored to be nominated tonight by those who represent the [Democratic] voters in the district," Alexander said.

A lifelong Enfield resident, Alexander, 30, returned to Enfield in September after four years of active service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is currently serving as a Captain in the Marine Corps Reserves.

His political experience consists of a stint on the Enfield Zoning Board of Appeals and serving as an intern in the Connecticut General Assembly, where he worked for Rep. Andrew Fleischmann.

Tallarita, who was first elected to the seat in 1998 and currently serves as deputy majority leader, said that she would definitely primary.

"I feel that I have served the people of Enfield well over 14 years," she said. "I will run on my record."

The Democratic primary is scheduled for Aug. 14.
